My thoughts on Overwhelming Fire in World of Tanks

Wargaming added a new temporary mode to World of Tanks recently called "Overwhelming Fire" which added automatic cannons to the game. I spent some time this bank holiday weekend playing it, here's what I thought!

💡
Sidenote, the mode has now been removed from the game. The last chance to play was August 27th 2023.

The mode introduced several new tier X vehicles:

  • Flakmaus
  • Thunderclap
  • Prut
  • PTV-51
  • Hailstorm
  • EBR 40
  • STuG E 100
  • B-C CS 59

I definitely got on with some tanks better than others, below are my favourites:

So the mode saw you participate in 15 vs 15 battles, much like random battle mode, you had a choice of Standard, Assault and Encounter battles. Each tank came with plenty of ammo for the automatic cannons and although you didn't get credit or XP for playing games in this mode, you also didn't have to pay for ammo, repairs etc as you didn't actually own the tanks.

So did I enjoy it? Well, I thought it was okay as a temporary game mode. I have a sneaky suspicion Wargaming were using this mode to test future tanks or at least, future guns. I think if they were added to the game, I'd more than likely stay away from them. I felt like a lot of players were just spam shooting in hopes they hit something, rather than taking a bit more time and setting up a proper shot.

The mode also introduced a series of missions in which you got bonds for completing. The missions were simple and the rewards were bonds, which is always a welcomed reward. The mission was simply "win a game and be in the top 12", which as long as you win and did some damage, you were bound to complete it. Annoyingly, I was one win away from fully completing the mode:

I was able to get 1000 bonds for completing the mode up to where I got though and for 2 hours work, I think it was worth it.

I think the mode would've been more fun if Wargaming introduced a couple of new maps specifically for it. I felt that some of the maps in rotation didn't quite work well with the mode, especially ones that are quite heavy on the number of buildings they have.

My fingers really are crossed that automatic cannons are not introduced into the standard game. I would welcome it back as an extra mode though!
