Waffenträger: Projekt Hyperion
Since September 25th, I've been spending an hour or so each day playing the latest Waffenträger chapter in World of Tanks called Waffenträger: Project Hyperion.
The mode itself is pretty simple, you team up with 5 other players to take down the Blitzträger auf E 110, driven by Ermelinda Jung. The twist this time though, is her sister, Hannelore Ritter joins you to try and take down her sister.
The Blitzträger auf E 110 starts each battle with 32,000 HP and your job is to take it down. You can only really do so by capturing generators that spawn around the map, and to do that, you need to kill the AI enemies placed around each one. Once you've captured a generator, the shields of the Blitzträger auf E 110 will be disabled for 60 seconds and you can cause major damage to it, once the 60 seconds are over, the sheids go back up and another generator needs capturing. If you capture multiple generators in a single life, then your damage goes up 25% each time, allowing you to wreak more damage, the longer you stay alive.
You have a choice of 4 tanks, each with different abilities, pros and cons:
- Thunderbolt
- Resistor
- Foudre
- Pojistka
Personally, I played the Thunderbolt for 99% of my games. It was the one I seemed to do the best in, it's not the fastest tank, but it does have decent armour and damage which means you can clean out generators pretty quickly, especially if you have a team-mate helping you out.
It wouldn't be a World of Tanks game mode without it's own progression system and Waffenträger: Projekt Hyperion has just that. There's daily missions you can do in order to climb the levels and reach level 20, collecting bonds, premium days, crew members and more! You also get "Harriers' Starters and Engineer's Starters" which allow you to use to on special Gates to get rewards such as credits, personal reserves, consumables, premium days and premium tanks.
For completing missions, you collect "tokens" to advance through the levels and each level is 10 tokens.
The daily missions are fairly straight forward and don't require too much time. Each day you could receive 27 tokens for doing each of the 3 daily missions, so you actually only need to play it for 8 days, providing you get the missions done. That said, there's also a set of missions for playing in the Blitzträger auf E 110 too, however you need to obtain Keys in order to play that tank. You can get Keys from progressing through the stages OR you can buy them from the Premium shop. Honestly, I don't think they're worth paying for, you can't just buy 1 on it's own, you have to purchase them as part of a bundle and the cheapest bundle is £10.97!
I think I got pretty lucky though as I was able to complete them all without spending a single penny:
By completing these missions, it gives you 6 tokens, which counts towards 6 levels out of 20, so if you can do them all, it's a pretty good boost!
This time round, I actually enjoyed playing in the Blitzträger auf E 110, I even won most of the games I played with it! Which is good, because it allowed me to progress through 2 ranks quickly. I did find a "cheese" method of winning though and it seemed to work in most of the games I played, if you use the Teleport ability right before a generator is captured, and move to as far away as you can on the map, it takes the enemy most of the 60 seconds to get to you, so they can only really get 3-4 shots in. It worked the majority of the time so the games I won, I actually still had most of my health left!
It felt slightly overpowered, but I guess that's the nature of the mode! The Hyperion ability is insane and definitely does the job of helping you wipe out enemies capturing generators!
Overall, I enjoyed the mode. I've played it in previous years but never actually bothered to complete it. It's good for the rewards for sure, excluding all of the credits I received using my starters on the gates, I also got:
- 4oo gold for using 4 Engineer starters
- Jane Folta as a crew member
- Hannelore Ritter as a crew member
- ~8 days of Premium (3 from progression and ~5 from Gates)
- 2500 bonds
I'd quite like any future modes to include more maps, I felt like after a while, the maps were getting boring as I'm sure there was only 4 in the mode. I'd happily take more maps!
