Steel Hunter Summer 2024

Steel Hunter Summer 2024

Last week saw the end of the latest Steel Hunter on World of Tanks and unlike the previous one, I actually spent time to play it this time round and even completed it. Actually, I completed it way ahead of time!

I've previously blogged about Steel Hunter which you can read at World of Tanks: Steel Hunter. It's one of my favourite modes that periodically appears in the game and is usually on for a couple of weeks. I actually much prefer this to Frontline because the battles are quick and the loot is actually good. I was surprised with how many Battle Pass points I was getting after each game.

There was a tournament for Steel Hunter running this time round but I didn't enter it. I wanted to play and get the rewards as quick as possible so that I could get back to Random queue to play some Tier 6 for extra Battle Pass points. Not much changed this time round, it had the usual progression system and daily missions which gave you points towards progression.

I got into a pretty good routine for getting the daily missions done in as few games as possible. I did all of mine playing solo as I think this mode in particular is much more fun outside of a platoon. One of the missions requires you to get into the top 4 when playing solo, which is fairly easy if you try not to combine doing it whilst getting damage. All of the times I've successfully completed this mission I've either gotten no damage or < 1000 damage, if I happen to spot an AI tank on the map I usually shoot it.

The next mission was to get into the top 8, 3 times. This is a similar technique to the first mission but you can afford to be slightly more aggressive. I usually played it safe until the respawn timer runs out (5 minutes) and then play aggressively cautious. Once I know I'm in the top 8, I then try and get as much damage as I can. Using this technique often placed me within the top 4 anyway!

The last mission was to get 12,000 damage across any amount of games. Once I'd completed the first 2 missions, I was usually sat at around 3-5k, so it was a bit of a grind to complete this one but my technique was to go in, all guns blazing, die, respawn, go in all guns blazing, die, quit out and start the next match.

Those daily missions would usually only take an hour or so to do, so the time investment wasn't big but the rewards were pretty good. The tanks I played were the same as last time round, I prefer fast tanks in this mode as it helps to get away when an enemy does catch you in their sights. I used a combination of Harbinger, Arlequin and Walküre to get the job done this time round.

I'm looking forward to Steel Hunter making a return but I'd like to see some changes:

  • Different tanks, I feel like they always have the same ones
  • A new map or tweaks to existing maps that you can actually notice
  • Different rewards

It's a fun mode but I'd describe it as quite stale. Not much changes each time it comes back and that's probably so Wargaming can just turn it on when needed whilst allowing them to work on other events.

For participating in the event, you get a currency called Steel Seals, which allow you to purchase Steel Hunter Styles and Decals from the store:

I had 6,359 to spend so I ended up getting the "Dreamland Veteran" 2D style, the "Steel Hunter" 2D Style, the "Heat of Battle" decal and the "Beserk Bear" decal. This left me with 59 points leftover, which I couldn't spend 🙃
